A little bit of Pickleball history
In 1965, after playing golf, Washington State congressman Joel Pritchard and successful businessman Bill Bell went to Pritchard’s house on Bainbridge Island, WA (near Seattle) to find their families bored. Pritchard and Bell struggled to obtain a full set of rackets for the property’s old badminton court. They used ping-pong paddles and a perforated plastic ball to play. They originally raised the net to 60 inches for badminton and volleyed the ball. On the asphalt, the ball rebounded well, so the net was reduced to 36 inches over the weekend. Barney McCallum first played the game at Pritchard’s the following weekend. The three men soon devised badminton-based regulations. They kept in mind the initial intent of creating a family-friendly game (USA Pickleball).
Fast forward to 2023, The Sports & Fitness Industry Association (SFIA) named pickleball the fastest-growing sport in America again in its 2022 Topline Participation Report. Nearly 2,300 players enrolled for the 2022 Margaritaville USA Pickleball National Championships, where professional players competed for $150,000. On Championship Sunday, 5,522 people packed the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, a record for pickleball attendance. In 2022, “pickleball” was one of the trendiest phenomena in the U.S. Domestic and foreign media covered it extensively (USA Pickleball).
